PREPARE FOR EMERGENCIES IN YOUR HOME
Experts have discovered that more accidents—even serious ones — happen at home than any where else. Such being the case I will take maximum pre cautions at home to make it a safe place. I will make it especially safe for children. My attention will concentrate on precautions against electrical shocks, fires, poisons and falling from high places. After taking all the precautions I can be assured that there will be less accidents at my home, but I would still need to prepare for emergencies. For these, guidelines are available in books and from the Civil Defence Force.
The first emergency I would prepare for is fire. The devastating effect of fire can well be imagined. To fight fire, the most important thing to do is to keep combustible materials away from places where there is a fire and not overload power. After doing this I will have a fire extinguisher in a handy position in the home. I will also train the people in the house on how to use the equipment. This is because most fires can be put out immediately upon discovery. A simple act like smothering a fire with a blanket or just splashing a pail of water on it may save us from great loss.
Another emergency to prepare for is falls or other hurts. A well equipped safety first box placed prominently will be of great help. I realise also that the best medical equipment can be useless if people do not know what they are. I also realise that there have been cases of people being hurt through the wrong medicine being used. Hence I will ensure that everyone in the home is familiar with the medicines in the first aid box. I realise also that it is a grave danger to place pills and other oral medicines in the first aid box, hence I will place these elsewhere.
It is unbelievable that people who spend fortunes renovating their homes and furnishing it, will not spend a mere pittance to prepare their homes against emergencies. A fire extinguisher and a first aid box in every home is a must. This is especially true if there are children in the house. I will make sure that I don’t make this mistake.
