If you had only one year to live, what would you do within that year?

ONLY ONE YEAR TO LIVE

This question which seems frivolous has been asked many times by thinkers of all ages. The reason behind the question is that if me had a limited period of life left, how would we spend it. Would we do things that really matter to us? If so what are these things?

For me, I will do things that give me real pleasure and things that I always wanted to but did not get around to doing because I am waiting until I am ‘free’ to do it For the purpose of this essay, I will assume that I have no shortage of funds to do anything I please. I will also assume that I am in sufficiently good health to enable me to do all the things I want to do.

I will begin my year by visiting the great cradles of civilizations of the world. I have always wanted to see the pyramids of Egypt and the other wonders of the Middle Bast. I believe that the ancients had achieved much that we should be grateful for. They lived in the spirit and learned from Nature without abusing Her or destroying Her. I shall pay homage to all the sites of ancient civilizations before coming back home.

I shall then gather all my loved ones around me and live with them for a while. I shall pour our my love on all of them and tell them what they mean to me, that they are to me more than all the treasures of the world. During this time I will visit all my favourite places in Singapore and bid good bye to them all. The places special to me are Changi beach, Toa Payoh Town, Little India, Geylang Serai, People’s Park and Hougang. I shall write good bye notes to all my friends and then I shall go away to await my passing.

I will proceed to the reservations of the Native Americans of North America. I am informed that they are those who, in earlier times, lived as man was supposed to – as one with Nature. Strange as it may seem, though many teachers have taught us how we must live with Nature, we have always lived against Her. I would like to live with them to the day I die, close to great Mother Nature. As I came from Her bosom, I would like to pass into her without any fuss or ceremony. Hence I would leave instructions that my remains are to be returned to Earth after cremation.
