The market was just round the corner. Its proximity was a disadvantage to me for my parents were fond of sending me to run errands for them. Just two days ago, my father asked me to just “run down” to purchase some apples and this morning, my mother wanted me to buy some vegetables.
Just because I was strong and helpful, I was always given such tasks. My elder brother had never been asked,as he needed “a lot of time for his studies”. Talk about favourtism! Grumbling a little with such thoughts in my mind, I made my way to the market.
What a crowd! Finding the noise unbearable, I hastened to the stall that sold vegetables. My mission was to buy one cauliflower and some long beans for my mother. I must have arrived late for there were only three cauliflowers left. Taking a good look at each of them, I took my time to choose carefully. Obviously irritated by my hesitation, the stall owner asked rudely if I was really keen on buying. Of course I was. What a silly question. Which sane soul would waste precious time standing there to look at the cauliflowers if not for the reason of purchasing one? Reserving those thoughts within myself, I chose one without any defects and with the least number of leaves at its stem. I queued up to pay for the vegetables but the stall owner ignored me completely. She turned her attention to other customers and spitefully kept me waiting for about five minutes.
When she saw the cauliflower that I had selected, she suddenly commented that it had been reserved by someone. Pretending to look apologetic, she grabbed one of the cauliflowers on display and put it in a plastic bag for me.
“But Aunty, that cauliflower doesn’t look as fresh as this one,” I remarked truthfully.
“Al my cauliflowers are fresh, little boy,” she glared at me, placing her hands on her hips.
“You want, you take, if not, be gone,” she continued in her aggressive tone.
I was taken aback by her rudeness and unfair treatment. Hadn’t I the right to choose what I wanted to buy? Was she doing that to cheat me because I looked young and naive or to spite me because I took such a long time to decide what to buy?
What made it worse was that she assumed a hurt expression on her face as she turned to other customers, complaining that I had accused her of selling stale vegetables. I protested immediately but she continued talking loudly. I was mad with anger and embarrassment! I left her stall without buying anything and I wished I could get all my family members and neighbours to boycott her stall!
