Imagine that you are a tree and write your autobiography.

There just are not many tamarind trees around in Singapore. So I am sure that I am one of the few. I stand right in the middle of Surin Park and am clearly the oldest tree here. I am well known for two things. One, my fruits are used for cooking and two, my wood is very hard. I believe I have been standing in the park for close to a hundred years now. You may think that it is an old age, well not for trees. For a tree like me,a thousand years is not yet old age, in fact it is not even middle age.

I remember being born from a seed and being transplanted into this park a long time ago. As I am in the park, there is one good thing for me. I meet a lot of people, especially children. I have a special affiliation to children because they touch me. I am not sure I know why, but adults do not generally touch us trees. Children love us more and if I had been shorter or if I had branches closer to the ground, I am sure they will climb all over me. I would have liked that. I see these children grow. Some of the people whom I saw as children many years ago, are now grown up and some are no more. I am sad of course.

There are not many things that happen in my life. Nothing affects me unless you decide to cut me down. Just that nearly happened to me about a couple of years ago. In fact they wanted to take down the whole park and put up some buildings. Luckily for me they changed their minds.

I still stand here today. I am tall and majestic like all tamarinds of my kind. I will be around for centuries if they let me. I think I will be.
