In any family, a husband and wife must be equal partners. Is this always true?

HUSBAND AND WIFE ARE EQUALS

By definition, a family consists of at least a husband and wife. It is they who form the basic requirements; all other additional members come later. Nature has fitted men and women differently; each is not complete without the other. Hence it makes good sense to accept that they are equal partners.

In their traditional roles, the husband went out to hunt - in recent times to work – and the wife stayed at home to cook and keep the house and raise children. Their physical and mental characteristics made them suit able for the roles. For centuries this was the role that each played. Since man had more physical strength, he ruled the home with an iron fist. Until fairly recent times, it was might which made right and man was king; with woman being little more than child bearer and housekeeper.

With civilisation came the realisation that physical strength did not mean everything. The ‘weak’ woman established her position as being an important element of the home. Man too realised that he was helpless without her. Laws were passed which made it clear that she was more than ‘property’ and that she had rights as a person. Hence came into being the partnership. This partnership is meant to be equal.

The question now arises: Are men and women equal partners, in all aspects? If taken to mean that can theyboth do the same thing equally well, it is clearly impossible. But if taken to mean that they have equal rights over everything then it is true. In fact empirically speaking, observation has shown that this is the best relationship they can have. If they have equality then each will concentrate on what he or she is best at and contribute what rises out of strength. On the other hand, if the partnership is unequal there will be resentment from the partner who is in second place and contribution from this partner will not be sincere. Such a partnership will be shaky and may bring down the concern.

Hence it is entirely appropriate for husbands and wives to be equal partners — in everything. It seems to be a good arrangement and it seems to work beautifully. If we take a close look we see that this understanding of equality is a result of evolution from the beginning of man’s appearance on earth – estimated to be 5 million years.
