Is Civil Defence important? Why?

CIVIL DEFENCE

The word ‘defence’ in ‘Civil Defence’ may give rise to a misunderstanding of the role this vital force plays in our lives. The Civil Defence Force is a vital role during peace time as well as when there is a war. They do not, usually, feature as prominently as the other forces in the country, because they turn up only when they are needed and it is a good thing they are not needed often.

During peace time the Civil Defence Force runs the fire department. In addition to fighting fire whenever it breaks out, they also maintain a fleet of ambulances. Besides these two heavy responsibilities for which they are always in training, members of the Civil Defence Force will have to prepare for any emergency. The catch here is that they may not know what kind of emergency to prepare for. A few years ago, when Hotel New World Collapsed, no one really knew what to do. That was the first time that such an accident had happened in Singapore. Yet the Civil Defence Force took command and assumed full responsibility. They were the unsung heroes who were there day and night and as a result a few lives were saved.

It is also their responsibility to train the population to take care of themselves during a war. It has been realised that during the last war, there were so many civilian deaths because of poor civil defence. Our Civil Defence Force is out to ensure that this will never happen again. Our part in helping with their work is to cooperate with them and if we have the time and interest, to join them as volunteers.

The Civil Defence Force provides a vital service. We should be proud to be part of it.
