The Importance Of Exercise

Our forefathers worked the soil and in other ways used their physical strengths in a variety of ways. They had no need of special exercises as they exercised their bodies all the time. Such is not the case today. Most of us live sedentary lives and the only exercise we get is that which we force upon ourselves. Exercise takes many forms and there are really a myriad of methods to choose from.

Sports and games are played by people of all ages. Many games are rigorous and if indulged in, the exercise factor is taken care of. There are different types of sports and games to suit different types of personal tastes. For the really robust types there is football, tennis, squash, badminton and for the not so robust, there is golf and cricket. Most of these games can be played by men and women of all ages if played from a young age. Naturally it is not advisable for a 70 year old person to begin playing football or hockey, unless his health condition allows him to.

For those who want to exercise but do not want to play games there are activities which are just as enjoyable These include swimming, tai chi, yoga, bersilat and other forms of martial arts or even just jogging or walking. If it is boring to do exercises alone, one can get organised into groups of people of like interests. Such exercises are suitable for all ages as long as one is rational enough not to over stress the body.

Exercise is important to burn up the energy taken into our bodies in the forms of food and drink. If the energy is not burnt up, it stores up in the body as fat. First of all it is unsightly and uncomfortable to carry all that excess baggage about. Secondly, the extra fat clogs up the arteries and causes heart trouble. Also, a few serious diseases have been linked to excess fat in the body.

Exercise is important to every body. The worse excuse one can make is that one is too old to exercise. Studies show that the older one gets, the more the need for exercise. Ultimately, exercise is a habit — and a good one. If we can make it as much a part of our lives like eating and reading, it will be a lifelong habit which will give us rich rewards – like a long and healthy life.
