Is it important to keep clean? Why?

There are a few wise sayings about the importance of cleanliness. One says that cleanliness is next to godliness and there is even one which claims that the body is the temple of god and must be kept clean. The fact that there was so much emphasis on keeping the body clean and that it was so important that it was even linked with god and religion, makes it clear that the ancients knew the importance of keeping the body clean. There is evidence to show that the science of the body was one of the earlier sciences.

Neglect of the body’s cleanliness invites a lot of terrible diseases. Fungus tend to attack parts of the body which are not kept clean and cause a lot of trouble. Bacteria too are attracted to bodies which are not kept clean. Thus if we want to live disease free lives, we need to keep the body clean. Also, an unclean body is unattractive. It is also likely to be odorous and keep people away from us.

As important as external cleanliness is internal cleanliness. We must keep our teeth clean and not poison the body with substances which are unclean or putrid. Such will attract illnesses too. The air we breathe also needs to be clean. Unfortunately there seems to be little we can do about this. We can hardly hope to choose what to breathe.

Keeping the body clean is an easy matter. We need to wash regularly, eat only clean food, keep our teeth clean and a few other easy things. To keep our appearance clean, we also need to wear clean clothes. Besides making a good impression, clothes also keep us protected from the sun and the environment. To ensure internal cleanliness, it is important that we keep away from food that may be unclean. This is especially with regard to eating in foreign countries. It may seem unlikely, but sometimes food which does not harm the natives of a country can harm us. This is probably because the natives would have built up a resistance to the disease germs while we have not.

If looked after well, our bodies will be faithful to us for a long time.
