It was Too Late

It was a warm but humid morning. I was packing my bag to be ready for a camping trip at the Changi Beach with my friends when my mother received a telephone call from the hospital, informing her that my father’s bike had collided with a taxi. He was admitted into a nearby hospital. My mother burst into tears and wanted me to accompany her to the hospital.I refused to go as I had to go to the beach. Besides, I thought that my father, a very healthy, tough and rugged man, could not have been injured too badly.

When I dragged myself home, it was about 9.30 a.m. the next morning. I knocked the door wearily for long, but nobody answered. Uncle Lim, my neighbour, came up to me and said that all the members of my family were in hospital as my father was in a very critical condition. Without much thought, I rushed to the hospital and discovered that my mother and my two sisters were crying sadly at a corner. “Boy, your father died this morning.” The sudden news of mishap sent a tremendous blow on me and I was totally dumbfounded. Tears began welling up in my eyes and I fell on my knees and yelled hysterically. I was extremely angry with myself for not going to the hospital to see him. Now, everything was too late! I was wrong. I realized that I had actually taken his advice, care, concern and love for granted. I had never appreciated and valued whatever he had given me. However, my father’s death woke me up. There was a tremendous change in my attitude and outlook of life. Thank you, father!
