Keep Your Promise

One evening, Jacky went up to his parents to ask for permission to attend a friend’s birthday party.

All along, his parents were very strict with him and they had imposed some rules which Jacky was required to follow closely. After Jacky promised to be home before ten o’clock, his parents then agreed, but reminded him repeatedly to keep his promise.

At about 11.00 p.m., Jacky took a cab home hurriedly.He quietly opened the door, removed his shoes and socks, then tiptoed to his living room, hoping that no one would be wakened up.

Suddenly, the lights were on. To his shock, he discovered that his father was standing right behind him, looking very furious. He then was taken to the kitchen.

“Jacky, you promised me to be home by ten. Why are you so late? A good person should always honour his words no matter what has happened.” Reprimanded his father.

“I did remember my promise to you, Dad. But the party started late because there was a blackout, so we all waited for about half an hour until the lights came back. I actually wanted to leave early but my friends insisted that I should stay a little longer,” explained Jacky. On hearing the explanation, his father kept on shaking his head.

“But don’t you think you should inform us earlier?” His father insisted.

Jacky’s tears welled up in his eyes. Obviously his father did not accept his explanation. He punished Jacky by cutting down on his daily pocket money for a week. Jacky accepted his punishment willingly as he understood that he was wrong not to keep his words faithfully.
