“Remember, you promised to help at the animal shelter this Saturday,” my mother reminded me.

I nodded confidently. A week earlier, my friend Ben and I had signed up to volunteer at a nearby animal shelter. We promised the shelter manager that we would spend the morning helping to clean the cages and feed the animals.

On Saturday morning, however, Ben called me excitedly.

“There's a new movie showing today! Everyone is going. Let's skip the shelter and watch the movie instead,” he suggested.

For a moment, I was tempted. I had been looking forward to the movie for weeks. However, I remembered the promise I had made. The shelter was counting on us.

When I arrived at the shelter, I was disappointed to find that Ben had not come. The manager looked worried because they were short of volunteers. I rolled up my sleeves and got to work. I cleaned cages, filled food bowls and even helped bathe several playful puppies.

While carrying a box of supplies, I noticed a door with a sign that read, “Do Not Enter.” Curious sounds came from behind it. The manager later explained that it was a recovery room for injured animals receiving special care.

By the end of the day, I was exhausted but happy. The manager thanked me warmly for keeping my promise despite the temptation to do otherwise.

As I walked home, I realised that promises are not merely words. They are commitments that show others they can trust us.

Step 1: Understand the Pictures

The pictures suggest:

• Adults talking to children → making a promise or agreement.
