Kok Seng and his father were walking on a pavement when they saw a sweeper cleaning the drain. Kok Seng made a face and hurriedly told his father to cross the road. As they were crossing sthe road, Kok Seng’s, father heard Kok Seng mutter under his breath – ‘dirty people’.
His father became angry with Kok Seng and reprimanded him for saying such a thing. “They are doing a service to the people and communityi by keeping public places clean.” Said his father deeply annoyed. Kok Seng was quiet for he did not want to get into trouble with his father but silently thought to himself that they were indeed dirty people. Later that night. Kok Seng ate his dinner, watched television and went to sleep. The following day, on his way to school, he noticed that the grounds were a bit messy and he could spot rubbish here and there. He passed a man who was reading the newspaper. The bold headlines which screamed that there was a public strike by sweepers, cleaners and generally, by the staff an the Public Works Departmenticaught Kok Seng’s eye. A stunned Kok Seng read further that the workers were on strike due to low wages and the poor treatment meted out to them by society..
As the days passed, life became unbearable for everyone, Towns, buildings, roads and pavements were dittered with rubbish. Drain stank badly. Garbage cans and chutes over- flowed with rubbish and rotting food, The very thought of going to school revolted Kok Seng with its unkempt grounds, dirty corridors and classrooms, and filthy toilets. The dust and filth made many people fall sick.
Newspapers were filled with reports of hospitals getting an alarming increase in patients. Everywhere, life was being disrupted due to a lack of sanitation. Soon, therer was chaos everywhere. Kok Seng could not stand it anymore and let out a yell.
To his greatest amazement, he found himself in the safety and comfort of his own bed. He ran out of his house and the familiar sight of order and cleanliness greeted him. It had all been a dream. The next day, Kok Seng went to meet the road sweeper he had tried so hard to avoid. He went up to the surprised sweeper and thanked him for doing so much for society. The happiness that reflected in the, sweeper’s face filled Kok Seng with joy.
A reformed Kok Seng had dearned his lesson.
