LIFE IS MEANT TO BE LIVED WITH PLEASURE

Observing all of nature and especially at the human animal we see that the attainment of pleasure is the most obsessive past time of all. From the time we are old enough to make decisions, most of us are absorbed in living with as much pleasure as we can and at the same time avoiding pain. Is this how we are supposed to live? Is there anything more to life than the seeking and enjoyment of pleasures? Many thinkers have written extensively on the subject. Some say that we should seek nothing but pleasure in life while others say that all pleasure is bad. Then again there are some who say that whether we like to or not, whether we want to or not, pleasure is what we are seeking all the time! Quite a controversial subject indeed!

Before we run away with the idea that thinkers disagree over the argument, we see, on closer observation, that they do not disagree so much as to whether we should indulge in pleasures or not, but more on what is to be defined as pleasure and what not. Most thinkers agree that pleasure does not meant instant gratification of the senses. Pleasures such as drinking to access or even eating without discipline is not defined as pleasure. It is clear that such ‘pleasures’ are short lived and actually cause pain if overindulged in. Hence by definition, they are pain and not pleasure and are not to be indulged in.

By pleasure is also meant what gives most pleasure to most people. One is not to indulge in pleasures that cause even a shred of pain to others. On this definition, we can say that hunting is not a pleasure because it causes pain to the animal hunted. By a litle argument, work becomes a pleasure. Work may be tedious at the time of being done but the remuneration received for it allows a lot of pleasure, and is out of proportion to the pain of inconvenience undergone when working. Having a family is a permanent pleasure — in spite of the little squabbles that cause a little pain time and again. Giving to charity is a pleasure because it makes us happy to give and others happy to receive and gives pleasure out of proportion to the sum. For example, compare the pleasure generated between $100.00 expended in gambling and the same amount expended in giving to a poor family to celebrate a festival. Which would generate more pleasure; both for you and the family that receives it? Friendship is a pleasure; love is a pleasure; filial piety is a pleasure and charity is a pleasure. Hence, it is true that we should live lives of pure pleasure — nothing else. Let us!
