Lost In A New Town

One sunny morning, a holidaymaker, Thomas, reached a town in Southern India by train. He alighted from the poorly-ventilated train and wandered around. He carried a suitcase wearily. He found himself in a strange place. He could not read the signs which were written in Tamil. Being English-educated, Thomas could not speak Tamil. The porters and most of the local inhabitants could not speak a word of English. He shook his head in despair. He regretted that he was not on a conducted tour of the town.

He hailed a taxi and gestured to the taxi-driver that he was looking for hotel accommodation. The driver nodded his head and drove him to the outskirts of the town. He found lodging in an old hotel. Food and wine were not available. Thomas put his suitcase and left the hotel hurriedly. He was hungry and thirsty. He ventured into the town. The town consisted of several streets and a maze of alleys. He passed zinc-roofed wooden shops selling handicrafts. Small-time traders exhorted him to buy some of their wares. After an hour or so, he stopped at a food stall where he had his meal and some drinks.

At this juncture, he wanted to return to his hotel. He walked and walked and his hotel was not in sight. He crossed the street and tried another route. It was in vain. He was lost in this new town. He sat on the kerb and looked blankly at the dusty road.
