Making A Difficult Decision

Whenever I looked at pictures of my beloved dog, Taffy, a dull ache would fill my heart. Recalling the good times I had spent with her, tears welled up in my eyes. I knew I could never get those good times back again, no matter what. Despite that, I did not regret making that difficult decision.

Taffy had been our pet for years. I spent lots of time with Taffy and took her for walks twice daily. She was like a best friend to me and she cheered me up when I was feeling sad by snuggling and licking me.

Unfortunately, those good times did not last. Taffy started to get tired easily and became weaker by the day. We took Taffy to the vet. That was when my whole world came crashing down.

“Your dog’s organs are failing. I don’t think she has much time left. I would suggest putting her down soon, as she is in a lot of pain now,” Doctor Ted suggested solemnly.

“What does putting her down mean?” I asked, worried that it was what I had guessed it was. As my mother explained the situation to me, my heart broke into a million pieces. “Why do I have to end my dearest dog’s life? This is so cruel and inhumane!” I cried in dismay. Tears welled up in my puffy eyes as I began to sob uncontrollably. I did not want Taffy to be in so much pain, but I would want her by my side for as long as possible. My mother put her arm around me and asked me gently, “Taffy is in great pain now. I think we should let her go…” I loved Taffy and I did not want her to suffer so much pain but I really could not decide!

Tears streamed down my cheeks as I exclaimed, “Mom, please do not force me to make this difficult decision now! Please give me some time to think over it!” My face was etched in misery as I picked Taffy up in my arms and dashed out of the clinic.

Taffy’s condition deteriorated over the next few weeks. When she coughed out a pool of blood, I had to finally make the heart-breaking decision to let her go.

The next day, we took Taffy back to Doctor Ted. I choked back my tears as I felt that the world was going to collapse on me. “I love you, Taffy. I hope that you will find happiness over the rainbow bridge,” I sobbed as I bent down and kissed her gently. Upon hearing my voice, Taffy turned her head towards me and opened her eyes for the last time. She seemed to know that her end was near and she was saying goodbye to me. The vet injected the fluid into Taffy and she closed her eyes slowly, forever.

Although this incident had caused great grief to me, even until now, I knew I had made the right decision then. That was the most difficult decision I had made.
