Mr Popularity

Actually he is not much to look at, nor is he a sportsman or exceptionally brilliant in his studies. But wherever Ram went, there was sure to be a group of students around him. They hung on to his words. If anyone had problems, they would confide in him. Even the teachers seem to talk to him as if he was one of them rather than one of us.

I read somewhere that there was such a things as charisma. Well, Ram obviously had it. The amazing thing was that I liked him too. And I cannot understand why. I decided one day, that I was going to find out just what made him popular. I started to observe him and asked around. I was out to find the magic formula,which I would then put to use myself. I needed all the popularity I could get.

Everyone liked him because he listened. I found this out. He had a way of making you feel important.He made you talk and expressed interest in what you said instead of waiting for you to finish so that he can put in his own views. He saw it your way. Also, he never judged anyone. He believed that as long as what you did, did not affect anyone, it is OK to do so. I also saw that he always smiled. If we were standing as a group, and a stranger wanted to ask directions, he would ask Ram. That’s because, Ram would have looked at him and smiled.

I also realised that Ram was sincere. He never pretended to like anyone. He really liked people and said so. He always found something nice to say about everyone. He would say how wonderful you looked, compliment your clothes, your haircut or even your smile If you looked sad, Ram would take you aside and ask you what was biting you. Ram never treated people differently. He made everyone feel equally important ta him. You could meet him for five minutes and swear that you were his best friend, that’s the way he treats everyone. He never back bites. If he speaks behind your back, it will be good. He will never forget your birthday.Suddenly he will appear and commence the birthday song pointing to you and everyone will just join in.Following that he will give you a hug and a homemade birthday card.

It was not difficult to be all those things Ram was,I discovered.
