MY FAVOURITE HAWKER
As far as I know he has been running the same stall for the last 16 years. He works furiously from 6:00 am to midnight everyday of the week. He takes a day off only once a year, on Hari Raya Aidil Fitri. He closes his shop from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm on Fridays, and goes to the mosque for his prayers. In spite of all the hard work that I see him doing, I don’t see him grumbling Or even showing reluctance in his work. You can get the Same smile from him at 6:00 am in the morning or as the last customer of the day at midnight. I know that he is a rich man, he must be after all that hard work, but his humility is surprising. He is fat and jolly and seems to be jovial all the time. Also, in spite of working in a sweaty environment, he manages to keep himself clean and tidy.
He sells Indian pancakes (roti prata) in the morning and fried noodles (mee goreng) from 11:00 am onwards. The roti pratas are crispy and nice and when combined with the hot curry that he serves with it are a pleasure to the palate. Of course there are some softies who eat roti pratas with sugar; which the hawker provides, with a broad smile, if requested. The one good thing about his roti pratas is that despite the inflation and the Goods and Services Tax (GST), they remain of the same size —though he has had to increase the price to keep up with the market.
His mee goreng is comparable with the best in Singapore. It is tasty and has the right amount of spices that the customers like. You can tell him exactly the amount of chilli you want and he will oblige and if you are a regular customer, he will know your preference after some time – without your having to tell him. He is experimental and unlike other members of his profession adds ingredients that they do not generally use. For example all mee goreng shops that we know add mutton as an ingredient, but being health conscious and knowing of the health consciousness of his customers, this hawker adds chicken meat. Obviously he has been following the news and knows all about cholesterol.
I believe his name is Razak, from the name of his shop but no one knows for sure. We all call him ‘Mamak’, which I believe means ‘uncle’ in his language. He is strictly a one man operation and is not known to have an assistant all the time he has been there. He is also not known to have fallen sick even once. I suppose it must be because of his good heart and generous nature.
