MY FAVOURITE PART OF SINGAPORE
It is a historical place and before the airport was built there was Singapore’s best beach. A lot of developments have appeared in Changi but it has still maintained the character of the quict village that it has had for so long. Changi Village is my favourite part of Singapore. This is the part of Singapore that I retreat to when I want some peace and quiet.
First of all there is nothing to do there, unless you want to swim. But then it is no more the long white beach it used to be and nowadays the East Coast Park is a more popular swimming spot. So since I do not like to swim, I have only one thing to do: nothing. The ideal is to spend a day at the village without any care and if possible without any reason to hurry back home. There are two rows of shops which are likely to remind the visitor of the hundreds of Malaysian small towns that we see along the roads of Malaysia. Behind one row of shops are houses and behind the other a large vehicle park to one side and the market and hawkers’ centre at the other. The hawkers’ centre offers a good variety of food and drinks catering to your taste; whether it is European, Indian, Malay or Chinese. There are few ‘sarabat’ stalls where you can buy a drink and sit there the whole day.
A better idea is to buy the food and drinks and eat at the sea side. The sea breeze is refreshing and the happy laughter of the children frolicking is bound to put you in a good mood. Then there will also be a lot of young people who somehow prefer Changi to the other beaches. Towards the evening you can see fishermen putting out to sea. They use little boats and nets and often there are only two of them in a boat. Watching the sea at night is a nice past time. The sea is usually calm and the waves gentle. A walk along the beach is refreshing, If you are lucky you can buy some fish from the fishermen, who are usually happy to sell their catch.
If you want to partake of the serenity of Changi Village, better hurry. Development plans are afoot; and very soon Changi will not be the same anymore.
