My Greatest Success

I had wanted very much to be part of the school football team. It had meant a lot to me to be selected to be part of the team. At that time they were not winning any games, so my reason for being selected was not so much for fame and glory. I just wanted to be part of them to train hard, and grab the National Junior Cup.I had not been considered good enough. Then one day,one of the reserves was injured and could not play anymore. I was allowed to join in, on condition that I proved myself within a month.

I was not surprised when my father was not pleased.He felt that football would take me away from my studies.I assured him that it would not. Then he laid a condition.If he saw my school work deteriorating, even just a little,I was out of the team and if I refused, I was out of the house on my ear. So there I was stuck between two ultimatums.

I commenced my training for football. Frankly it took away much more time that I thought it would.Training was everyday after school. That was exactly the time I did my homework and my studies. I had to stay in school the whole day everyday except Sunday. Since training commenced at 3:00 p.m., there was not enough time for me to go home and have my lunch. I was forced to eat at the school canteen. The only time I had to do my homework was between school and football. I planned my time very carefully, even minutes and seconds. I cancelled out all other activities like watching TV and even chatting on the phone with my friends.

The training made us better and better until, for the first time in the history of the school, we won the first round at the district level. I was thrilled. When Dad heard the good news, he looked through my school work to see if I had let up in that area. I had not. All the hard study after football paid off.

In the area of football, our team went beyond the district and was selected to play in the National Junior Cup. Ourcoach, Mr. Harvey, trained us hard. We pushed ourselves to the limit. We worked ourselves up until we reached the semi-finals. We beat the team from Yishun and then we were in the finals. The day for the finals arrived and the whole school was assembled at the stadium. Our coach was a bundle of nerves. I saw him sitting there looking all tensed up.

Then it began to rain. We were happy; somehow we felt that we played well in the rain. We were right;that was the best game we ever played. Coming from a tough kampong background, rain was nothing to us.We beat the opposing team two goals to one. We won the cup and brought it back in triumph to the school.

That was the greatest success of my life; even my father was thrilled and overlooked the fact that I had declined, by just a few marks, in my History.
