My Secret Admirer

The doorbell rang. Thinking it was my brother who had retured from school, I walked to the door, intending to give him a sound scolding for not using his key.Imagine my surprise to see a man holding a bouquet of flowers!

I must have looked comical with my jaws unconsciously dropped and my eyes fully dilated with surprise as I stared at him. The man tried to stifle his laughter as he explained that he was from the Noel Company and was asked to deliver that bouquet of flowers to someone called Sue. “That’s me! That’s me!” I responded immediately, still dazed and probably looking stupid before him. After signing for the delivery, I lost no time in admiring the beauty before me. A dozen red, red roses with baby breaths! That really took my breath away!There was a card accompanying it which read “To Sue,with love from your admirer!” How romantic and sweet!That really set me thinking, with pleasure and girlish delight, of course, who that sender could be.

Could it be from Thomas, the tall, charming gallant class monitor who was a favourite among the girls? He had openly praised my art pieces and if I recalled accurately enough, he had smiled at me at least five times last week. Perhaps he was interested to know me as a special friend? After all, we got along very well with each other since the school term started. A few girls were rather envious that he talked so frequently to me.

Feeling somewhat exulted, I continued in my speculation. Could it be Joe who had told Anna my buddy that I was cute? That comment was ambiguous!Should I read that as a compliment or insult, knowing that “cute” meant “ugly but adorable”? Whatever it was,he did share with me recently that he loved to plant surprises in people’s lives. Could this be his surprise?gratulated myself for having the rare opportunity to receive so strong that I spent one hour listing down the names I was, distracted, absorbed but thoroughly elated. Even my parents noticed the flush in my cheeks and as expected, warned me about neglecting my studies.

After flattering myself with those thoughts, I consuch a splendid gift. The urge to soive the mystery was of all possible “admirers” among the guys I knew. There

The next day, while I was having lunch with Anna,she asked if I liked the surprise gift. “What surprise gift?”I asked innocently. “The bouquet, of course!” laughed Anna in return. So, she was my admirer! I told her sheepishly what my initial response was. Anna burst out laughing as she explained that she admired me for my diligence and perseverance in my studies. She half chided me that I should always associate the term (admirer) with a guy. Girls could be admirers too, couldn’t they? She added that Thomas was someone who had ready smiles for everyone and I had taken that too personally.

What a mistake! I laughed too, realising what a muddle-head I had been. Nevertheless, I playfully accused Anna of bringing the anti-climax into my experience.Perhaps, it was better that way or I would behave like an ass before Thomas or Joe in the days that followed!Wouldn’t that be more embarrassing?
