My Stupid Deed

I always hated to be without money. I seemed to have a short supply of it. I worked hard at earning and eamed more than a lot of people, but somehow I could not save even a cent from my income. I tried several times to sove ten percent of my income but I could not.Then things took a turn for the worse. One month I found that I could not make ends meet. I was short of exactly a hundred dollars. I had to pay the license for the radio and the television set. Actually if I had put aside ten dollars a month it would not have been a problem. I kept postponing this for a few months and then suddenly it was November and time to renew the license. I calculated my pay again and again and kept coming to the same conclusion; I had to get that hundred dollars from somewhere. But where?

The money lender was a scruffy man and he smiled his gold toothed smile at me. I could see he was happy to see me. Since he was so willing to lend me the money, I decided to take a loan of $200.00 instead of the $100.00 that I needed. I was to pay back the loan in four installments of $90,00 each, I felt sure that I could manage, I took the money and solved my problem.I kept it a secret from my wife and told her that I had just borrowed $100.00 from Thomas and I told Thomas to back me up if Daisy called him. He did not mind telling a lie to help a friend.

The first month I had trouble paying. The money lender was happy to accept just the interest of $40.00.It was only then that I realised that I was trapped. I was in despair and did not know what to do. The second month I could not even pay the interest. The money lender added the interest to the capital. That meant that I had borrowed $240.00 from him and he worked out the interest and payments for the new sum. The following month again I could not pay. The money lender started to threaten me over the telephone. I started to avoid phone calls and asked my wife to lie that I was not in,I started to get calls in the middle of the night. I was in despair. Then one day a thug called. He insisted on coming into my apartment. Once inside, he told me to assemble the whole family. Then he told me that if I did not pay within a week, he would come back and kill all of us. Then he left.

After he left, I told my wife everything. She held me fightly and broke down and cried. I cried with her.Then she took out a few pieces of jewellery from the cupboard and told me to sell them all and pay the man the next day. I was sad but agreed. It was worth anything to get out of the clutches of the monster. My wife said,”That was the first time and I hope that it will be the last”. I nodded. “Never again”, I said.
