Narrate a visit to an army camp.

We stood before one of the larger SAF camps- the Singapore Armed Forces training Institute, better known as SAFTI. This was the institute which had been the birth place of most of the newer SAF units. It is the place which trained, and still trains, the officers and the NCOs of the SAF. We stood in awe for the escort officers to come and take us in. We were to spend one full day in this historical place.

To begin with we were assembled at the main hall of the institute and given a briefing of the history of SAFTI and the role it played in training the leaders for the army. We learnt that if the capacity of the place was full, SAFTI can take up to 4000 trainees.

After the briefing, we were taken on a tour of the institute. We saw the armoury, the cookhouse, the gymnasium, the sports facilities, the range and the obstacles course. The officer cadets played host during Our lunch and we had our taste of army food. We were surprised to learn that the food was tasty. The portions were also generous and we ate our fill.

After lunch we went to watch the soldiers in training. We knew that this aspect was the most important in the institute. We were impressed with everything. Towards the evening we were invited to use the sports facilities and played some games. The day ended with drinks at the cadets’ mess. Then we got into the bus and went home. We had mixed feelings about the place. We all knew that most of us would be there one day and were wondering if we could match up to the standard of this fine institute. We were determined to.
