Narrate an important event in your family.

When my sister was with child, naturally the whole family was excited. This was the first child in our generation. In her seventh month, we insisted that she stay with us. My brother-in-law was glad because he did not know what to do. He was glad that our family was willing to take the responsibility of looking after his wife at the time of her delivery.

But as luck would have it, on the day that my sister had her labour pains, only my brother-in-law and I were at home. And if he knew little about what to do, I knew less. We looked at each other and decidedl that the best thing to do was to take her to the hospital. He was happy to do this because he felt sure that they would be able to do better than he could. So we rushed her to Toa Payoh Hospital. There was a little bit of a panic at the admission desk because we did not know the procedure and did not have the documents. But we managed because the hospital staff were understanding.

Within minutes, my sister was wheeled into the labour ward and just like we had heard before and seen in movies, we started to pace the floor outside the ward. By this time my father and mother joined us. The three men paced the floor, while my mother sat there the picture of coolness. That was not surprising as she knew what was going on. We waited for about two hours and then the nurse came out and announced that it was a girl. I was now an uncle and mighty proud of it. We were not allowed to see the baby or my sister and the doctor told us to come the next day. We obeyed meekly and went off to have a snack to celebrate.

Next day we were there in full force to see the new arrival.
