Narrate an incident in your life which made you feel good

A NEAR-TRAGEDY

I actually helped to save a life and that makes me feel good; even to think about a year later. It happened in an unexpected place and I was surprised at my own quick actions.

We were sitting around on a bench at Changi beach.I felt that the evening was too beautiful to waste by swimming so I suggested that we sit around and talk. A young couple were sitting in a nearby bench and we did not want to bother them so we went a few benches away. Typical of Joseph he started a discussion on politics and soon we were arguing away heatedly. Being secondary school students we were idealists and would not let go of our beliefs and so the argument became hot indeed, but thoroughly enjoyable. Then we heard another argument; it was coming from the bench occupied by the young couple, and it was obvious that they were not arguing about anything as frivolous as politics.

Suddenly Juliet left and started running to the sea, with Romeo running after her. He managed to catch her just as she reached the wall. Then they started arguing at the wall. Then suddenly the unexpected happened; Romeo jumped in. Juliet screamed and we ran to her. It was getting dark and we could just see a figure splashing about in the water. It was clear that Romeo could not swim even one stroke. Juliet was screaming away hysterically. Instinctively I dived in.

As I am a good swimmer, it took me only a while to get to the poor man. One problem though; I was wearing jeans and a t-shirt — hardly something to swim in! Anyway, I swam as fast as I could. Romeo had disappeared by the time I reached where he was. Joseph knew just what to do; he had his eyes fixed on the location and guided me to it. I dived in hoping for the best and groped wildly. I caught something and came up with it. It was Romeo and he was struggling wildly. By this time, two of my friends were in the water and together we heaved the poor man back to shore. Joseph had meanwhile called the ambulance. It arrived, probably from Changi Hospital, in minutes while I was in the midst of resuscitation. Poor Juliet stood by weeping and thanking us profusely at the same time. We helped to place the man in the ambulance and it took him away.

We waved the girl good bye as she sat in the ambulance with her beau. That night we called the hospital and were relieved to hear that Romeo was all right.
