National Day Parade

On the 9th of August every year, Singapore celebrates its National Day. National Day is like the nation’s birthday. It is the day that Singapore became an independent nation.Every year without fail, a parade would be held to celebrate National Day.

My class was fortunate enough to be chosen to attend this year’s National Day Parade. The parade was held at the National Stadium. We all met in school at four o’clock in the afternoon. We were supposed to be seated at the stadium by five o’clock. We arrived on time and waited for the parade to start. While waiting, we sang songs and waved our flags. It was a sunny but cool afternoon, so it was very pleasant.

Finally the parade started. The Parade Commander called all the contingents to attention to welcome the arrival of the Prime Minister and then the President. We all cheered loudly to show our welcome. The President inspected the guard of Honour, and then we witnessed the marchpast. All the contingents marched around the stadium. They all looked very smart and they marched very smartly. Then came my favourite part of the parade, the fly-past. We saw about five fighter planes in the sky doing formations.Then the parachutists performed their stunts, bearing a huge flag of Singapore. We cheered loudly. We felt very proud to be Singaporeans.

Next we sang a few songs and waited for the performances to start. The theme of this year’s National Day Parade was the Singapore River. So the performances told the story of the Singapore River and how important it was to the development of Singapore. We enjoyed the performances thoroughly because they were all very colourful and the songs accompanying the performances were very nice. I especially like the part where they used long pieces of blue cloth to symbolise the waters of the Singapore River.

During the finale, all the lights of the stadium were switched off. The performers carried little torches and so did we. The whole stadium looked enchanting. It looked as if all the stars had fallen and were lighting up the stadium. We again cheered as loudly as our lungs would allow us. We were all very thrilled by the beautiful sight. Then came the highlight of the parade – the fireworks and laser display.The fireworks look like huge, colourful flowers blooming loudly in the sky. The laser show that followed was also very spectacular.

It was our first time at a National Day Parade for my classmates and I. We will probably not get a chance to come next year. However, we really enjoyed ourselves and most of us hope we would be able to attend future National Day Parades again.
