Near tragedy

The news on the radio stunned all of us: The plane that John was on had crashed into the swamp in Pulau Ubin; as soon as it had taken off. No one was expected to have survived. It was an early morning flight and John was on his way to meet his parents in Jakarta. Immediately I called irene. John was her boyfriend and I knew she would be hit very hard. I was right. She had taken an overdose of sleeping tablets the minute she heard the news. Her parents had rushed her to hospital. She was out of danger but under heavy sedation. I tried to keep calm and think the matter through. In the end I gave way to despair and cried out aloud. John was my best friend.

Then I called everyone. All seven of us packed into my car and we made a beeline for the airport. I was distraught, so I asked my sister, Emily, to drive. We were all in shock, no one spoke a word. At the airport,we looked about at the large crowd that had gathered.There were lamentations everywhere. We formed a group and waited patiently while trying to console each other.Then Elizabeth – my Elizabeth – formed a sub-group to rush to the hospital to console lrene and to be with her.In our haste we has forgotten all about poor Irene.

The officers at the airport looked drawn and shaken.We could see that they were all human. Some had tears in their eyes while others were smiling and trying to keep cool while they tried to calm down the relatives. I could see that their smiles were fake, they were just putting onbrave fronts. Deep within they were probably crying jus like the rest of us. Perhaps they felt that in some way they were responsible. The Minister for Transport was there and trying to look brave as he spoke sofitly to the reporters. I realised that he spoke with a lump in his throat and I was glad he was so human.

It was Emily who discovered it. She wandered away from the group and went to read the passenger list which had been put up. Then suddenly she rushed to where we were huddled together. She was so excited that she spoke so fast that we could not make out what she was saying. Tom, her beau, grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her violently. Finally she gasped,”Johnny’s name is not there; he was not on the plane!”

With trembling hands I dialed John’s number on my handphone. A sleepy voice answered,”Yah?”

“John!” I screamed letting my tears burst forth and flow freely. I listened while he mumbled something about missing his flight and how he felt stupid about it. I cut him off in mid-yawn and looked at the eager faces before me, “The clown overslept! Let us go to his apartment and kill him!” I yelled.
