Neighbours

Neighbours! Talking about ‘neighbours’ causes me to reflect on three basic responses to them – that of appeal, repulsiveness and indifference.

The Lin family who lives opposite to my unit is one family that fits perfectly into the first category. Mr and Mrs Lin have two children, an elder son and daughter.There will be another addition to the family soon, as Mrs Lin is pregnant with the third child. Being simple folks, they live a simple life, wearing simple but presentable clothes, organising simple family outings and holding simple celebrations for birthdays.

Mr and Mrs Lin are a sociable couple and often invite my parents and I over for a chat. It is during such informal interactions that we realise how simple and unsophisticated they are. Their lifestyle appeals very much to my parents who often sing praises of their simplicity and contentment in life. Even the way they educate and discipline their young kids are admirable. They paceset in cultivating good manners, positive attitudes and fine qualities in their children by striving towards the same goal themselves. The couple even deliberately prepare their children psychologically for the coming addition so as to minimize sibling rivalry. As I have observed, there is peace and harmony in the Lin’s residence. What an ideal home setting!

The Wang family who live two units away are a direct contrast, It is not surprising to witness their brawling as they set of for their weekly family outings every Sunday.The two kids are always at loggerheads with one another.Instead of checking them, Mrs Wang would plead for their co-operation while her husband simply looked on

Disinterestedly.

The couple has a materialistic mentality and enjoys sharing their dreams of setting up a private family business,Feeling very relaxed with my parents, they would mention the various countries they have visited over the past five years or so. How wearisome it is to listen to them!Somehow, I detest talking to them and merely view them as a boastful, materialistic couple who lack the basic skills in bringing up children. Their persistence in making known their self-importance and confidence is most annoying and repulsive. Thus, I avoid their company and was rebuked by my parents for lacking civility. Well, call me mad or ‘anti-social’ but isn’t this a practical way to stay untainted by their negative values in life?

Another neighbour who is of interest to my parents but not to me is Mr Quek. He is bachelor who lives alone and is marked by his eccentric ways. According to my mother’s feedback who once spoke casually with him in the lift, Mr Quek expressed his interest in redecorating his house every six months. He would also paint a different colour to his door every year as it gives him much pleasure to be a non-conformist. Would you believe it, he celebrates Christmas the day after as he claims his friends are not available! While my parents find his eccentric ways amusing, I respond rather indifferently after my initial response of curiosity. Perhaps, it is because one gets immune to his unpredictable ways after a while.He, in my opinion, should be called ‘Mr Queer’ and not ‘Mr Quek’!
