Everyone asked Pete for advice; for some reason,He was also free with his advice and dispensed them freely whether anyone asked him or not, and even when they did not need it. His advice was usually logically sound and his arguments as to why he thought his advice was just what we needed proved to be reasonable,However, in my case it turned out to be a disaster. It was really bad advice and I realised now that I should have acted on my own hunch rather than taken advice from Pete.

I was at the cross-roads of an illustrious career in the army. Then I met a consultant – on the MRT.and he offered me a job as a trainer. He needed an assistant to talk to school children on leadership. Since I was a trainer in the army, I was sure I could handle the job. It promised a lot of adventure and I was excited.I almost accepted the job from Frederick, that was the name of the consultant, on the spot. He told me to go home and think about it. That was when I decided to approach Know-all Pete.

“The army is a steady job. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, etc., etc.” Said the wise one.I nodded. Then he went into a roundabout, logical argument to prove to me why his advice should be taken- against all my convictions. I nodded furiously all the time as he poured forth. At the end of it all, I was sure he was right and I was wrong. Right there, in front of Pete, I called Frederick and told him of my decision. He kept silent for a while and then told me that it was my decision and he respected it.

Exactly a month later, I came to my senses. |realised that what I really wanted to do was train children.I decided to flush Pete’s advice down the toilet. Then I looked for Frederick’s card. I could not find it and realised that I had probably thrown it away; thinking I would never need it again. I had even forgotten what the name of Fred’s company was so I could not call him. I had just lost touch with a wonderful opportunity.

Now I look longingly at the MRT stations and trains in the hope that I would meet Frederick again. As for Pete, I have stopped taking any advice from him. In fact,I have stopped taking advice from anyone.
