“You’re not a pet, you’re a pest! Get out of the kitchen now!” shouted Mrs Lang, looking extremely cross.

Mrs Lang was not usually so stern with Tim. In fact, she was quite fond of her puppy and would even play catching with it. But today, she was too tired and irritable. On top of doing all he household chores, she had to look after Tim while both her children were at school. Tim was usually easy to be taken care of, but today, it was very active. In its excitement at sending the children off to school, it had knocked down an expensive vase, and it smashed into pieces. No wonder Mrs Lang was mad with it. She was beginning to think that it was more of a pest than a pet.

That night, there was a power failure in that area. Mrs Lang groped around the house to look for torches and candles. The Lang family had to rely on them to find their way around the house. Well, the children seemed to enjoy it: making shadows on the wall, pretending to be ghosts and telling scary ghost stories. They even continued playing with the torches and candles in their bedroom. But, before long, all had fallen asleep. Tim, as usual, slept at the foot of the bed.

In the middle of the night, Mrs Lang felt something tugging at her blanket. She opened her eyes and saw Tim. She was about to scold it for disturbing her when she smelt something burning. Tim barked loudly and dashed out. Mrs Lang ran after it. To her horror, she saw smoke coming out from her children’s room. She rushed in and grabbed the children, calling for her husband to get the fire exiinguisher. The fire was soon put out.Only a piece of curtain was burnt in the fire.

“Thank you, Tim. Thank you for saving my children’s lives. You’re not a pest anymore but rather a wonderful and clever pet!’”exclaimed Mrs Lang.
