An Outbreak Of Fire
As I left the school gates, I heard the sound of a siren. I looked up and saw three fire engines approaching from the left. Within seconds they flashed past and headed towards my right. I looked up at the sky and just as I had expected saw huge clouds of black smoke about half a kilometer away. It was in the direction of my block, so I broke into a run.
I arrived in less than ten minutes and was relieved to see that the fire was not in my block. A small crowd had gathered and everyone was talking excitedly. The firemen were going about their jobs like the professionals that they were. They had extended the ladder on their machines as the fire was on the top floor – the twenty fifth floor — of the five room point block. Black clouds were still billowing. From the group of excited people about me, I gathered that the fire had started only a few minutes before. The family was safe and owing to the quick actions of the residents, everyone in the block was down. I saw a group of anxious faces as they looked up.
Soon the fire was brought under control and the black smoke stopped. The firemen came down in a group, looking tired but satisfied after their ordeal. Their faces were black from the soot. The crowd cheered and the firemen smiled through their black faces. Then they waved, got into their engines and within seconds left the placed.
I made a few enquiries and was glad to hear that no one was seriously injured. The fire had broken out because of someone’s carelessness. The lady of the house had left a cooking fire unattended and got involved in a long telephone conversation, forgetting that she had turned on the stove. She did not know how the fire started but suddenly she had seen flames from the kitchen. She had tried to fight the fire herself but could not because the fire extinguisher was in the kitchen, at the part which was on fire. She had received a few burns. Seeing that the situation was hopeless, she had grabbed her baby and ran out of the house screaming. A neighbour had called the fire brigade. The damage done was more than$50,000.00. I felt sorry for the occupants of the house.
