Our Friendly Garbage Collector

Ah Bing works as a garbage collector. Every morning he goes on his rounds in a rubbish truck. His two other colleagues accompany him.The truck takes him to housing estates. Whenever the truck stops, he and his colleagues descend. They empty bins endlessly, trotting beside the truck as it plods along. They wear orange luminous warning vests during the course of their work. Ah Bing does not even pant or break his stride. He has been in this job for the past ten years. His arms are strong. He can lift dustbins and sacks of rubbish that can weigh about thirty kilograms each. He has a strong nose that enables him to tolerate the stench of rotting food spilling out of garbage bags. Then he has to bear the pain of cuts and scratches when handling branches, broken glasses and nail-embedded planks.

When he spots a dustbin, he heads for the garbage and grabs it. Then he swings it against the ledge at the back of the truck before tipping it over. He works fast and seldom talks to his partner, Ah Kou. He perspires profusely under the hot sun. Some of the refuse he handles comes wrapped properly in large plastic bags. This makes disposal easy. At times, he has to brave flies and mosquitoes swarming over rotting garbage in dustbins.

Despite the discomforts, stench, filth and dust, he takes it in his stride. He plays an important role in keeping our country clean. He is our friendly garbage collector.
