Plagued By Nuisance Calls

A construction worker, Ah Seng, was trying to snatch some sleep after many late nights of hard work when the phone rang. He got up wearily and yawned repeatedly. He then rubbed his bleary eyes as the phone rang incessantly. When he picked up the receiver, there was no answer. This infuriated him. He yelled and shouted abuses at the caller over the phone. He then slammed the phone down, alarming and waking up the other occupants in the house. As he was tossing in bed, mosquitoes buzzed round him relentlessly. He was covered with mosquito bites. At this juncture, the phone rang again. He sensed that it was a prankster’s call out to disturb his restful sleep. He flew into a rage. He rose from his bed angrily and picked up the phone. The caller, a total stranger to him, booed at him. It was the last straw. He screamed at the prankster, “I’ll strangle you if I see you in person!” He ripped off the telephone wire with his burly hands, smashed the telephone apparatus and hammered it with a hammer. The telephone apparatus was a total wreck. The floor was strewn with its wreckage. His outburst terrified everyone in the house.

At this juncture, his doting mother stepped out and consoled him, ”I know you are exhausted and trying to get some sleep. That prankster is a nuisance. Go back to sleep. I’ll clear the mess on the floor.” Ah Seng was visibly upset.

Ah Seng was troubled by nuisance calls that interrupted his sleep.
