Rain

As a child, I could always tell if rain was approaching. Like everyone else, I gathered one could smell a unique smell of burnt grass that had been doused with water - just before a storm is about to descend. I grew to love the smell. I grew to love rain.

Living in a tropical country has allowed me a grand privilege of experiencing wonderfully cool rain at moments one least expect it. In the old days, when I was living in a village, my siblings and I would often hear a cacophony of croaks coming from a pond in the front of our house. That usually happened after a rainstorm in the daytime. According to my grandmother, the frogs wanted more rain and thus, they croaked for more.

Whereas in many countries, a continual downpour can cause devastating floods and mudslides, in Singapore this has hardly been the case. Rain in this country helps clean the pollution in the air. It helps clean the dust off the leaves of trees and shrubs, giving then a shine that can put to shame the most glitering of diamonds.

Apart from all these, I love rain because without it the blooms in my garden would not be as colourful and pretty as they are now. For as we know, in rain there is food for all living things.
