A Photographic Expedition
It was Mr. Jeyabal’s idea. As the teacher in charge of the Camera Club, he proposed that we should spend a Saturday in the forest reserve to photograph wildlife. Everyone got excited as many of us had never been into the jungle before. So we made a decision to make a real day out of it.
On Saturday 18 June 1994, we assembled at Macritchie Park and got ready. Everyone was well equipped and well prepared. Mr. Jeyabal was dressed as if for a military operation – complete with map and compass. We were not sure we needed them but were glad that he had taken precautions against getting lost. Without much ado he led us for about a kilometre down the truck and told us to get snapping. We looked about and asked him what he wanted us to snap as there was nothing about. He looked at us thoughtfully and reminded us that we had to look for our subjects. Unlike humans, animals usually did not assemble and pose for photographs. We looked harder. When we looked at him again in helplessness, he told us, with a sarcastic grin, that if were looking for tigers we were in the wrong jungle.
Then we got wise and sure enough there was wildlife everywhere. It was an incredible morning. We were busy clicking away and all sorts of subjects presented themselves. We took close ups of ants, weird looking insects, lizards and even larger animals like squirrels and monkeys. We were not sure about the monkeys being wild though, because they seemed so anxious to be photo graphed.
A group of us specialised on butterflies and another went after birds. That day we learnt that contrary to popular belief, Singapore is actually teeming with wildlife. Mr.Jeyabal smiled and nodded wisely when he saw how enthusiastic we had become.
A week later, we laid out the best of our photographs in the hall in an impromptu exhibition and drew a lot of fans and admirers, and of course a few sarcastic remarks as well – mostly from people who wouldn’t the difference between a camera and a transistor radio.
