Recount a time when you learnt a crucial life lesson.

“Johanan, I just don’t get why Harold bullies people! I mean, what does he get from doing so?” I uttered to Johanan exasperatedly after Harold had sauntered past us with his cronies. The previous day, Harold had bullied another student in our class! He was a notorious bully in our school and to our utmost horror, he was in our class! During recess or after school, Harold would look for lower primary students who had wandered into the back of the canteen and trap them with his cronies.

Once he had trapped them,he would threaten them to give him all their money in their wallet or threaten them to do things for him. If they failed to comply, Harold would beat them up! He then would set them off in tears.Teachers were unable to punish him as lower primary students were

too timid to report him.

However, that fateful day after school, I decided to throw caution to the wind and follow him, just to see what he would do to his victims and why. I had begun my sneaky plan. After school, I followed Harold. I was annoyed to see a puny, skinny boy was following him too. Worried what Harold would do to him, I thought “I can’t let that poor, innocent boy be sighted by Harold! So many students have suffered at the hands of Harold, this won’t happen again!” I muttered to myself. As such, I peeked around every corner of the walls to make sure he did not notice me. I also took small, light and sneaky steps while following Harold from behind.

Soon, Harold has reached his usual “trap”- the back of the canteen. It was hidden behind many walls and was deserted as the students had all left for home. I peeked around the corner of the wall, waiting to see what was going to happen.

“Give me all the money in your wallet now! If you don’t... you will get the beating of your life from me!” Harold yelled at the boy, pointing at the boy’s pockets.

“Alright.. Here... Take my money. Please, don’t do anything to me...” The timid boy pleaded with Harold, trembling in fear as Harold slowly took out his wallet from his right pocket. Taking out all his money in fear, he passed it to Harold. Upon seeing what had happened, I was incensed. Gritting my teeth, I was not able to accept what had just happened. Not willing to let him take another victim, without a shadow of doubt, I leapt out of my hiding spot and went to confront Harold. Little did I know what the consequences were...

“Harold, stop right there! Bullying students who did nothing bad to you, aren't you ashamed?” I bellowed at Harold. Harold turned his head to look at me. “What did you say to me? Nobody talks to me like that! Who do you think you are? You shall regret it!”

Harold yelled before laughing at me like a hysterical maniac. Staring at him face to him, with his fists clenched and his eyes narrowed into slits of fury, I then realised what I had gotten myself into.

A million thoughts raced through my mind. Oh no! Why did I choose to do this?

What should I do now? Do I run or cower in a corner? What should I do? This is a problem that I had never encountered before! All the victims of Harold were beaten up by Harold! How could I escape? I need to act fast now!

My heart beat like a frenzied African bongo drum. A surge of adrenaline was coursing through my veins, invading every blood vessel in my body. The snakes writhing in my stomach grew larger in size as my intestines coiled into a knot. I stood rooted to the ground like a statue, not able to move a single inch.

Out of the blue, I remembered what my mother had told me, “Never back down without a fight. Even if you encounter a problem that you have never encountered before, never give up and try your best to overcome it! Nothing is impossible, so think of any way to overcome it!

After recalling what my mother had said, I immediately thought of an ingenious idea. Even though I had never encountered this problem of being beaten up and bullied by Harold, I was not going to give up! Without hesitation, I walked up to Harold, whipping out my phone from the right pocket, then pressing the buttons “999” on the phone. After that, I hastily shoved it in Harold's face, telling him that if he did anything to me and ever bullies anyone ever again, I would call the police and the police would arrive in no time. I had the interminable will of a soldier fighting in a battlefield. With the determination and courage to stand up to Harold, I embraced the feeling of doing something which I had never done before.

In a matter of seconds, Harold and his cronies feared for his safety and could only dash off from the location, as fast as their legs could carry them. A victorious smile spread across my face as I thrusted my fists into the air. I knew it! I knew Harold would succumb to my master plan and be scared of me calling the police! Relief gushed through my heart like millions of gallons of water coming out from a waterfall, as if relief was washing over me. Then, the boy thanked me profusely with immense gratitude. I went home, beaming with happiness. I was like a dog with two tails, happy and proud

that I had stood up to the bully I had feared once.

After that day, I had learnt a very crucial life lesson. Some of us may back down when we encounter a problem that we have not seen and encountered before. However, if we have the tenacity to do our best and use our intelligence, we could overcome the problem with ease.
