SECONDARY SCHOOL ESSAYSNARRATIVE ESSAYS

Since that incident, I was “invisible” to a friend of mine. Even though this incident occurred two years ago the memories of the incident were etched in my heart. This was how it all started …..
“Hey, James! Let’s meet at the school gate today! I have something to show you!” I quipped animatedly over the phone.
All I heard in response was a groggy “Ok” and James hung up the phone. I got out of bed energetic and it was the first day of a new school year. James and I had been best friends since Primary 4 and we did not get separated into different classes
even in Primary 6. I have been looking forward to going to school since the December holidays and finally the time has arrived.
“What is so important that you wanted to show me that deprived me of an additional fifteen minutes of sleep?” James greeted me groggily.
I fished out my brand-new I-Phone 13 Pro Maxx and quipped, “I received this for my birthday present one week ago and I decided not to tell you earlier so that I could surprise you today!”
James silently mouthed the word “Wow” in amazement and was bewildered beyond words. I started blabbering about all the features of the I-phone 13 Pro Max: length of 6.7 inches... with ceramic shield... tougher than any smartphone glass... water resistant.." I went on and on.
He turned green with envy and I could sense a slight hint of jealousy. During recess, everyone except James left the classroom and went to the canteen for recess. When I returned back from recess, I discovered that my brand new I-phone was missing!
A million thoughts flashed through my mind at the speed of light. I had lost my brand new I-phone worth more than a thousand dollars! My heart rate increased exponentially and perspiration trickled down my forehead rapidly.
Just then, I suspected that James might have stolen my phone. When James stepped into the classroom, I glared at him with bulging eyes. Baring my teeth into an ugly snarl, I hissed. “How dare you betray me! How dare you steal my phone!”
Unable to comprehend what was going on, James stood rooted to the ground, stunned. After regaining his composure, he stood his ground defensively.
“No, I did not steal your phone!”
“Stop lying to me like I’m a fool! You were jealous of me and you were the only one who stayed in the classroom during recess!” I snapped, my tone was bitter and filled with disgust.
“ I really didn’t steal your phone!” he denied indignantly.
“Oh, for God's sake, just give me back my phone! Traitor!” I boomed. My expression was cold and resolute as my face contorted into an ugly scowl. My decision was set in stone. Unable to believe his ears, crystalline tears pooled in his eyes.
“How dare you blame me, with no evidence, or proof!” he snapped, eyes red with fury. An amalgamation of emotion trundled through me at the speed of a bullet train.
Guilt. Shame. Remorse.
These emotions engulfed me like a thick smog. Contrition spiked to a climax in my veins.
“Why had I been so blind? What had I done? I recused myself.
“From now on, you're no longer my friend!” he barked and snapped me out of my reverie. Before I could even react, he stormed out of the classroom. The last sentence he spoke to me shattered my heart into smithereens.
Just then, my form teacher, Mr Ho, entered the classroom holding an iPhone in his hand and he asked whose phone it was. It was the exact same model and brand as mine and I claimed my phone, hanging my head in shame and remorse. Mr Ho then told me that he had found it along the corridor outside the classroom. Crushing disappointment seeped through my heart as regret welled up within me. The remorse I felt was beyond words.
From that day, James ignored my calls. I wanted to apologise so badly for how I had behaved on the first day of a new school year. Whenever I tried to make eye contact or talk to him whenever our paths crossed in school, he would pretend that I was invisible.
And just like that, I lost my best friend, James.
Through this incident, I learnt the hard way the value of friendship and that the adage “ Time heals all wounds” was not true. Time may alleviate wounds, but not heal them completely and instead, leave a permanent scar. And those who inflict it, like myself, will forever have a reminder of our regrets, hopefully to learn from, which I did. I would never, ever again blame anyone, especially friends, without evidence or proof. From that day onwards, I was so remorseful that I would never repeat this silly mistake ever again. However, all these lessons came with a heavy price: a broken friendship and an emotional scar.
