Saved!

I woke up with a startle. The room was very hot and I could even smell smoke. I tried to switch on the light but it did not work. I got up from my bed and opened the door. Smoke floated in and I coughed very badly. The acrid fumes almost chocked me.

My room was on the fifth floor of a hotel. I was touring the pountry and had chosen to spend a night in this ill-fated hotel. Even now, I could scarcely believe that the hotel was actually on fire.

But cries of “Fire! Fire!” were all to convince me. People were rushing up and down the corridor. The smoke became thicker and more irritating.

Several hotel guests had already come out of their rooms They stood in the corridors, their faces were pale. A man came running from the other end of the corridor.

“There is no way for us to escape!” he gasped. “The fire has already spread to the staircase. The flames will reach us soon!” We rushed to the windows which overlooked the street. Smoke was billowing out of them on the floors below. The flames were licking upwards and our floor would soon be ablaze.

All of us realized that even if the flames did not reach us, the building would soon collapse, crashing us down onto the rubble. As we were watching the firemen fighting fearlessly the flames far below, we waved our hands frantically and shouted to attract their attention. At last, they spotted us.

A huge fire engine was driven up directly below us and a long ladder was raised. A fireman climbed up the ladder. He helped us to climb down the ladder one by one until we all landed safely on the ground. Fortunately, we were all salvaged. Although most of us had lost our possessions in the flames, we heaved a sigh of relief as we were still alive.
