Scaffolding Saves Two Families From A Blaze

It was nearly three o’clock in the morning. The Lim family members were fast asleep. They resided in a fourth-storey flat of a private housing estate. Scaffolding had been put up over the weekend because the building needed a fresh coat of paint. All of a sudden, Mr.Lim was awakened by loud voices outside. He smelt smoke. He sensed something amiss. He acted fast. He rushed to wake up his wife and two teenaged children. At this juncture, thick smoke began to fill the house. As it was pitch dark, he groped for the door. He intended to lead his family out to safety. When he opened the door, he had the biggest shock of his life. It was burning furiously outside the doorway. Flames were leaping and spreading to engulf the door.

Mr. Lim and his family retreated fearfully. His wife and daughter, Doris, were screaming and crying. They then dashed into the kitchen. They wanted to climb out of the flat and use the scaffolding to get to his neighbour’s house. He unlocked the grille of his kitchen window but it could not be opened because part of the scaffolding protruded into his flat. He then broke off one of the metal bars to free the grille and climbed onto one of the scaffolding.
