Second Chance At Life

I can see very clearly where this great change of character came about: It was after the accident. In fact it seemed to all of us that she had become a completely different person. She used to be grumpy and indifferent to all of us but all that has changed. What really mystified us was that she had become so kind and gentle; a far cry from the rough and tough ‘dragon’ we had all been used to seeing. Her kindness and gentleness went so far as to her spending whole days at a stretch at the old folk’s home and tending to the sick with her own hands and donating ninety percent of her wealth to charity. As we were distant relatives, I decided to ask her directly why and how she changed.

She looked up from the tea she was sipping and smiled at me. It was an all-knowing smile and there was a sincerity in it I had never seen on anyone else. “Eve,do you know what is an out-of-body experience?” she asked. I nodded furiously. She smiled again and adjusted to a more comfortable position as she began her story. “I was fully conscious at the time of the crash. In fact I could feel the heat of the burning car,” she said.”I felt the hands of the rescue workers as they pulled me away. I remember screaming as the car exploded,”she continued between sips of tea. I swallowed and wondered how she could be so calm about it. Then she went into a long description about her strange experience.

Essentially: She had died and come back to life. She had passed out and when she woke up she was aware of a floating sensation. She had seen her body on the operating table and the doctors and nurses around her. She had tried to talk to them but they had not seemed to hear her. Then she had looked about her and seen a long tunnel. She had floated towards it. Then she had sped along. At the end of the tunnel, she had seen Lord Buddha himself. He had welcomed her and spoken kindly to her. She had been grateful that she had attained heaven. The Lord had then explained to her that it was not her time to die yet. He had then guided her back to the tunnel. The next thing she knew, she was back in her body.

“I realise that life is just a dream and not real at all,” she finished and put down her empty cup. I stared at her fascinated. “Don’t tell anybody,” she said as she placed her hands gently on my shoulder and guided me to the door. I looked at her for a long time and then bent and kissed her.”Who will believe me?” I asked and walked to the door. At the lift I turned to see her standing at the door. She was looking at the sky and smiling the sweetest smile I had ever seen on anybody.
