Should Capital Punishment Be Abolished?

Capital punishment is punishment with death. It is practised in many countries today, even though many others have abolished it. It is common for capital pun ishment to be imposed on people, usually murderers, who have intentionally killed other people.

History records that this was a common punish ment in many societies and was actually sanctioned by most religions. The reasoning that led to this was simple. Since the man or woman caused the death of another, it is good for the state to avenge the dead person’s death by killing the person who caused his death. It seemed just at the time.

The only fault with such simple reasoning is that the law believed that the criminal was entirely responsible for his actions. He killed because he wanted to and thus must be punished. Such reasoning is now thought to be too simplistic. In some countries in the world today, psychologists have discovered that most of the time a person’s becoming good or bad depends a lot on his up bringing and education. If this is true then a murderer cannot be entirely blamed for killing. Perhaps it is the society that is partly to blame. If the society is partly to blame, it is not fair to give the capital punishment to a murderer. For his share of the blame it should be enough to imprison him. After arguing in this way, some countries have banned capital punishment.

Coming back to our problem, this does not seem fair at all. The argument has gone to the other extreme. If this is to be accepted, then it has to be agreed that no one can be responsible for his actions. As may be expected, in some societies where the death sentence has been disallowed, murders have increased. In my opinion, we must always take responsibility for our actions. Man is a reasoning animal and cannot hide behind any circumstances for what he has done. Abolishing the capital punishment may increase murders and make it unsafe for innocent people. This is certainly not fair. Hence, I think, capital punishment should not be abolished.
