Singapore Education System Pathway -Explained by former MOE Teacher
The Singapore education system provides highly structured, multi-pronged pathways. Students advance from Primary education to Secondary school (which incorporates Full Subject-Based Banding), and branch out into diverse post-secondary institutions, including Junior Colleges, Polytechnics, and ITE Colleges, which ultimately lead to university and career pathways.

This infographic shows the Singapore Education Journey, explaining the different educational pathways a student can take from primary school to work.
1. Primary School (Age 7–12)
Students spend 6 years in primary school.
At the end of Primary 6, they take the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), which determines the secondary school pathway they enter.
Some students with special educational needs may attend special education schools.
2. Secondary School (Age 13–16)
Under Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB), students take subjects at different difficulty levels (G1, G2, or G3, corresponding to traditional N(T), N(A), and Express levels) based on their strengths.
Express Course / G3
4 years
Leads to GCE O-Level
Students may progress to:
Junior College
Polytechnic
Institute of Technical Education (ITE)
Normal (Academic) Course /G2
4 years
Leads to GCE N-Level
Students may continue to Secondary 5 and take O-Levels.
80% of students will go to ITE normally.
Normal (Technical) Course/ G1
4 years
Leads mainly to ITE.
Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examination
From the 2027 graduating cohort, students will sit for the new Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examination, comprising different papers for each subject level. Students will receive an SEC that reflects the subjects and subject levels that students offer.
This is similar to the A-Level examination, in which students take subjects at H1, H2, and H3 levels; and the PSLE, where students take subjects at standard or foundation levels.
Other Options
Integrated Programme (IP)
Specialised Independent Schools
Special Education Schools
Privately Funded Schools
Alternative Qualifications pathways
3. Post-Secondary Education (Age 17–22)
Students can choose different routes:
Junior College (JC) / Millennia Institute (MI)
2–3 years
Leads to GCE A-Level
Then to university
Polytechnic
Usually 3 years
Diploma programmes
Can enter university or work
Institute of Technical Education (ITE)
2 - 3 years
Technical and vocational education
Can progress to Polytechnic
University
Undergraduate degree programmes
Usually 3–6 years depending on the course
4. Work and Lifelong Learning
After completing their studies, students may:
Enter the workforce
Continue upgrading skills through Continuing Education and Training (CET)
Move between education and work throughout their lives
Key Message of the Infographic
The most important idea is that Singapore's education system provides multiple pathways. Students are not limited to a single route:
PSLE results do not permanently determine a student's future.
Students can move between pathways.
Polytechnic, ITE, JC, and university are all respected routes.
Lifelong learning allows adults to continue upgrading their skills even after they start working.
In short, the infographic shows that Singapore's education system is designed to help students progress according to their abilities, interests, and career goals rather than through one fixed path.
