Someone I cannot understand.

SOMEONE I CANNOT UNDERSTAND

He is a few years older than I and shares a room with me. Yes, he is my elder brother. I do not doubt his sanity for a minute and I know very well that he is a very intelligent man and a capable one too. He is a nice person, if you get to know him and very likable. Yet there are a few things about him that I do not understand.

First of all he is all wrapped up in himself. He has very few friends and though he is a good looking man, has no girl friend. In fact once Ma received a call from a girl asking for him and got all excited; finally a girl had called him. Then it turned out that it was the librarian asking him to return an overdue book. My brother spends practically all his time in the room and confides in no one. He reads a lot and watches TV only once in a while, when some dull and dreary movie is on. He hardly communicates with his family members and does not even laugh at jokes that Pa likes to tell at the dining table.

Once I asked Ma why my brother is that way and she answered that he had always been like that. He just spends a lot of time with himself and thinks a lot; one wonders about what. In an effort to do something for him,my mother takes him with her everywhere, especially to meet her friends and their daughters. But as it turns out, after the first meeting, none of the girls are keen on meeting my brother again. But then he does not bother either.

To get him interested in something other than books, my father bought him a computer. That was it; now he stays in the room even more than before. Within a month he bought about a hundred volumes of books on computers and now he seems to be able to make the computer do anything he wants it to except, perhaps, to kiss him. He has even given the computer a name. ‘Madeline’ is stuck on the monitor and he refers to it as ‘her’. The other day my father was grumbling about whether he had created a monster.

One thing about my brother I do understand: He Joves his family. He always remembers our birthdays and you will find a nice present on the bed when you wake up in the morning and a big hug with a whispered ‘Many Happy Returns’. He is very protective over Ma, Pa and me and there is no doubt that he will do anything in the world for us. I have realised that I don’t have to understand him. All I have to do is love him and I do.
