PSLE CONTINOUS WRITING COMPOSITIONS

My heart was pounding as I stood at the starting line of the annual school cross-country race. I was not one of the fastest runners in school, so I had only one goal—to finish the race without coming in last.

The whistle blew, and hundreds of runners surged forward. I ran steadily, saving my energy for the later part of the race. As I turned a corner, I noticed a bicycle lying on the side of the path. It looked as if someone had abandoned it in a hurry.

A few minutes later, I heard a loud ringing from a nearby public telephone. To my surprise, nobody was around to answer it. Curious, I glanced at it as I ran past, but I continued focusing on the race.

As the finish line came into view, I suddenly heard my name being announced over the loudspeaker. Confused, I looked around. Had I done something wrong?

When I crossed the finish line, the principal greeted me with a broad smile. “Congratulations! You have come in third place!”

I was stunned. Several runners ahead of me had accidentally taken a wrong turn and left the race route. As a result, I had moved up the rankings without realising it.

My classmates cheered loudly while a medal was placed around my neck. I could hardly believe what had happened. Winning third place was completely unexpected because I had never imagined standing on the winners’ podium.

That day, I learnt an important lesson: perseverance and determination can sometimes lead to surprising rewards.
