PRIMARY SCHOOL COMPOSITIONS (UPPER PRIMARY)

It was the June holidays. Raju and his family were on their way to Johor Bahru. Raju’s parents wanted to do some shopping. Raju’s father was driving. Raju sat in front with his father, while his mother sat at the back with his two-yearold sister, Ratha.

When they reached the Bukit Timah Expressway, they discovered to their annoyance that there was a massive traffic jam. Raju’s mother decided that they should forget about going to Johor Bahru after all and head for home.Unfortunately, there was no exit or U-turn along the expressway. They could only turn back when they reach Woodlands. So, they were stuck in the traffic jam.

Raju’s father turned on the radio to try to catch an update on the jam. Fortunately, Raju had brought some simple card games along. He played a few rounds of games with his mother. Ratha had fallen asleep. About an hour later, Ratha woke up and started crying. Raju’s mother fed her with some milk and she was quiet again. Within that hour, their car had moved only about five hundred metres.

Raju’s mother had also packed some refreshments, so they decided to have a little picnic in the car while being stuck in the jam. Raju was quite hungry by then, so he gorged down the sandwiches, chocolate bars and orange juice. Ratha had fallen asleep again, so Raju’s mother could do some knitting. Raju’s father took out the newspaper to read while keeping an eye on the road ahead. Raju decided to read his comics.

Suddenly, Ratha woke up and began to bawl. She had wet herself. Raju’s mother could not change her in the car because she needed to give Ratha a wash. There was still some water in the water container. Raju’s mother tried to use the water but it was not enough. Ratha was feeling rather hot and irritable. By then, both Raju’s parents and Raju were feeling very frustrated. The situation was worsened by Ratha’s loud crying.

Fortunately, they reached Woodlands quite soon. They quickly went to a fast food restaurant, where Ratha could be given a proper wash in the toilet. They had some drinks and decided to head home as the jam at the causeway had still not eased up. Raju and his parents were quite disappointed but they would rather go to Johor Bahru another day than to be stuck in the jam.
