Taking Care Of Business

“If only he would listen to me,” she sobbed, “I could explain everything”.

I looked at her. It was obvious that she had been crying the whole night. My teenage sister was on the verge of a ruined relationship – her first real one. I put my arms around her and consoled her as best I could.I felt sorry and knew that Ralph meant a lot to her. He was my friend and he had been keen on her right from the start. I decided to get to the bottom of things and began to dig out details.

My sister, Agatha, had gone to the disco the previous night with Ralph. He had been paged by his office and had to rush off to attend to an emergency;he was a security expert. When he returned, he had not seen his beloved where he had left her. Upon checking with friends, he had discovered that she had just left with- of all persons – Howard. Howard had a reputation with the ladies – a bad one. Ralph and Howard hated each other’s guts.

I dug deeper and asked her why she had left with Howard in the first place. Then the whole bad business appeared. He had gone to her and sworn that he had received a call that Ralph was involved in an accident and that he would drive her to the scene immediately.He had seemed sincere, Naive as always, Agatha had taken the bait. Howard had driven her to a secluded part of the beach and made dishonorable advances.Agatha had hit him with her handbag and left. Then she had come home and called Ralph. Ralph was a man of few words: he slammed down the receiver. She tried again and again and drew the same response.

Being elder brother to a teenager carried certain responsibilities. I decided to carry them out. I got on my motorbike and went straight to Howard’s hangout.He looked nervous as soon as he saw me. I was dressed all in black – as if I was going to a funeral, his. It must have scared him a bit. He grinned uncomfortably and I signaled him with my little finger – to symbolise how little he meant to me. My words were few and simple.I told him that he had an hour to go and see Ralph and straighten things out or I was going to spread him out all over the pavement. He looked at the pavement I pointed to and then at me. Then he shrugged his shoulders and got on the bike behind me. I sped off.At the block, I waited as he went up to Ralph’s apartment.

He came down soon enough, with a stupid grin on his face and a large, angry red mark on his face- probably the result of getting in the way of Ralph’s fist. Then he shrugged his shoulders and ambled away sadly. I watched him go, revved my bike and headed for home.

Agatha greeted me at the door. She did not say anything. I had to spend five minutes wiping off lip prints from my face.
