That’s What Friends Are For!

The three girls sighed loudly with relief. The training lesson was just over. They, together with the other classmates, had to jog around the track six times before they were allowed to have their break.

“What a bother,” complained Lisa as she spread her lanky legs before her. “This fitness test preparation is killing me!”

Jane, who could not agree in any lesser degree nodded her head and complained loudly that her tiny,frail body was going to break down sooner or later.She was nicknamed ‘Birdie’ by many others because of her small frame and hook-like nose, which resembled a beak!

Sitting comfortably beside them was Jeannie, the optimist of the group. She cheered them on by reminding them that the impending test would soon be over. Having said that, she offered to give them an ice-cream treat at Swenson after the test.

The next day, the girls met in the library as arranged.It was some time before Jeannie turned up. It was unlike Jeannie to be late for their appointment. Nevertheless,after her profuse apologies, they lost no time in doing their homework. After half an hour, Jane was surprised to find Jeannie staring into space. She was deep in thought and kept biting the tip of her pen,

Jane nudged Lisa to get her attention and both asked with concern if Jeannie was alright. They could not help feeling that something was amiss.

Jeannie gave a slight startle and denied having any problems. She explained that she did not have a good night’s sleep and was feeling lethargic.

Forthe next few days, Lisa and Jane were surprised to see Jeannie having butter toasted bread for every recess. The once cheerful, outspoken friend of theirs became more reserved and shunned the company of other classmates except Lisa and Jane. Even when she was with them, she spoke little and gave many lame excuses concerning her meals.

“Jeannie, you’ve got to tell us the truth if we call ourselves buddies. You’re just not yourself lately,” started Lisa as the girls left the school gate together.

“We’re concerned about you and we do want to help you,” added Jane quickly. Their reassuring tones warmed Jeannie’s heart immediately.

Looking up at them, Jeannie’s dewy-eyes met theirs.”My dad was just retrenched and we’re afraid of running into some financial problems.” She went on to explain that she had been trying to save money by eating simply during recess and not forgetting to put aside some for the ice-cream treat that she had promised them a few days ago.

With the truth disclosed, Lisa and Jane reassured Jeannie that they understand her situation. They took turns to prepare sandwiches for Jeannie. They gave a friendly pat on her shoulder and said, “That’s what friends are for!”
