THE ADVANTAGES OF BEING A YOUTH

Youth is the time of adventure, of daring, of conquering great heights and of changing the world to make it a more beautiful place. Youth is the time when we have the energy to carry out and achieve what we want to; it is also a time of learning and of discovering new things about the world around us and most of all of discovering ourselves. It is the time of boundless energy when we feel that nothing can stop us. Yet not realising our potential, leads many of us to waste the years of great advantage, that we have as youths.

Youth is the time of energy. At this time, we have the power to do great things. We can embark on noble projects which will turn into our life’s work and yield fruits in the later stages of life. It is the time of concretizing our thoughts on what we want to become. If necessary this is also the time of setting out on paths to building careers. The advantage here is that if we wander into something we do not really want, there is the opportunity to move away and try again. Such opportunities do not present themselves when we are mature. What happens is that many older people get stuck in careers they do not really want to be in; and are forced by circumstances to remain there. Speak to any of them and they offer the same advice: Make a good career decision when you are young.

We are also full of courage — in fact, bordering on recklessness —at the time of youth. Having the strength, the energy and the daring to do things, we need to be fired by idealism. This also happens naturally to youths. We are idealistic; we look at the world around us and see how it can be better. Then we get together with youths of similar mind and set about correcting the wrongs.

Youth is also the time of passion. It is the time when we find our life partners and fall in love and prepare to begin families of our own. The energies of the body naturally favour the activities of beginning families at this time. Unlike careers, however, in this area the decision must be made very carefully. Changing of decisions here can be very painful.

In truth youth is a time of great advantages which must be seized and the best made of it. The only caution that is required is that while taking advantage of the time, no pain should be caused to others. Our gain should be nobody’s pain.
