THE ADVANTAGES OF GROWING OLD
Aging is about the only thing that happens to everyone equally in the world. By aging is, of course, meant, getting older according to calender years. Other meanings of aging — replacement rate of body cells and maturity - do not happen equally to everyone. For the purpose of this topic, we will take aging to mean that when a person gets along in years, he is also growing older in other meanings – such as getting more mature and the body getting slower in replacing worn out cells.
When younger, all of us suffer from lack of wisdom. We would not have learnt much about life and about people and will go about gaining experience — sometimes painful experience. The mark of a young person is impatience in getting things done and often it is this impatience that causes things to go wrong. An older person knows that impatience is not a good quality and experience has taught him this. He will proceed cautiously and with the conviction of getting the results he is aiming at.It will take young people many years to attain this attitude of calmness and confidence.
Looking at old people we see that they care less for material wealth than the young. This is because they have come to realise that the things that make a person happy in life are beyond wealth. They realise also that there are higher realities — perhaps in the spiritual realm— which mean more than riches and perhaps more than life itself. Older people are often quick to make peace and avoid offending. They have learnt from experience the pain of being offended and snubbed; hence they want to spare others the pain. They have the advantage of knowing that life does not mean gaining something for oneself at any cost. It means having a situation where everyone comes out a winner.
By and large the advantage of being an older person rises out of having lived successfully through life’s difficulties, and come out as winners. This process cannot be hurried and that is what growing old is all about. It comes out of changing what they can and accepting what they cannot and learning from every situation that has risen in their lives. This is why the old all over the world are looked upon with the reverence they deserve.
