The scene is one of expectation as boys and girls mill about the assembly area. Everyone glances at the school clock from time to time and those who wear watches look at their wrists. Two prefects, notebooks in hand, take their stand at the school gate. Any minute now, will herald the beginning of a day of education.Students move closer to the assembly area so that they do not have to walk too much in order to be at the assembly point. Also, if they were late, they cannot choose where they want to stand.
Everything is ready ... then riiiiing goes the bell.Immediately there is a flurry of excitement as students, especially the secondary ones, run to their forming up areas. The ‘O’ Level class students do not hurry; they are seasoned warriors and know that they will get to the forming up area in time. The prefects close the gate allowing in a couple of students who made it to the gate just before the bell went. A few students clap their thighs in anger – with themselves and with the prefects- as the gate shuts on them.
A voice shouts “School!” Immediately there is complete silence as the students get ready for the command to come to attention. “Sediia!” shouts a voice and everyone snaps to attention – almost with military precision. Then the national anthem is sung with the utmost seriousness but with hardly any harmony. As the last strains die out, the students hear the principal’s stern observation for the hundredth time,”Your singing needs improvement”. The students wait for the dreaded command from him, “We will sing the anthem again!” Today, however, the command does not come and as if is not an assembly day, the principal nods and gets down from the dais. This is the signal for the students to move to class. A low murmur goes through the assembly as students begin talking. Several commands of “Quiet!l” are heard as the teachers, monitors and prefects keep order. Then the students begin their march to their respective classes. The two gate-keeping prefects open the gate and a queue of latecomers forms as names are taken down and warnings issued. In five minutes the entire assembly area is bare again.
In each class the teachers and students exchange greetings. Homework assignments are submitted and excuses made. Books are taken out and groans let out as students turn their pages to begin work. Some students have smiles on as it is their favourite subject; others wear frowns and let out sighs as they turn the pages of some dreaded subject.
Another day of school had begun.
