It was an idea mooted by the Honourable Member of Parliament himself. He thought it would be a good idea to collect used textbooks at the end of the year and redistribute them to needy students. The committee jumped at the chance to make an event of it. Ideas flew back and forth and before the end of the meeting the original idea had been expanded to include collection of all sorts of books – not only textbooks – and distribute them, let vendors sell new books from rented stalls, have food stalls and finally allow some games stalls. AIl proceeds were to go to charity. The event was to be called “Hougang Book Carnival 1998” and it was to be held in the park. The meeting ended on an exciting mood – with a vote of thanks to the chair and prayer(in six religions) for good weather.
The prayer was answered: It dawned bright and sunny on the selected Sunday. As could be expected the merchants were the first to arrive. There was a lot of yelling and shouting as they set up their stalls. Soon the smell of cooking filled the air. The queues of people bringing their old books to contribute began to form as early as 8:00 a.m. It snaked its way to about 300 metres in length. The MP arrived without any pomp.Suddenly he was there dressed in shorts and T-shirt. With him were his lovely wife and two mischievous children- who seemed blissfully unaware that they were children of an MP. Anyway they were as children ought to be- just children.
Without much ado the carnival was declared open. The young contributors trooped in with their books and deposited them all over. Soon there were little mountains of books everywhere. While volunteers worked frantically to arrange the books in some semblance of order, a queue started to form on the other side – of people who wanted to select the books. There was chaos. Children ond adults were rushing about and enjoying it too. Then the stuffy organisers got a few queues organised and everything was dull and orderly.
The day was exciting with the largest crowds at the food stalls. The book shops did a roaring business and their smiles were broad. The ones who seemed to have the most fun were the organisers and workers. The day came to a close at about 8:00 p.m. Then suddenly the rains came. Somehow the clouds had held until that very moment.
